Choline acts as an important methyl donor in numerous metabolic reactions. It is considered an essential nutrient needed for cell membrane integrity and to facilitate the movement of fats into and out of cells. Choline is also a component of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and is required for normal brain function. Choline is available as choline bitartrate (a soluble salt) or as phosphatidyl-choline in lecithin.
Inositol has similar properties to choline in its lipotropic effect and is found in most cell membranes.
Methionine is critical for hepatic intracellular concentrations of glutathione. Glutathione and other sulfhydryl peptides are essential in the detoxification of xenobiotic substances and in converting lipid soluble toxic agents to water soluble material for easy excretion via the kidneys.
